What is coaching?

What life coaching is NOT!

Coaching is the art of facilitating desired change.

Coaching is personal development in action. It is a practical skill, reinforced by a good understanding of the theories and applications of personal growth. Coaching engages the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—and focuses on facilitating the change the client truly wants.

Life coaching is about the now and the future.

A life coach helps people move forward in a positive way in the areas of life where they crave change. Coaching is about breaking down barriers and creating the ideal environment for positive action. It looks at the present and sets goals for a more successful and fulfilling future.

Life coaching begins with awareness.

Life coaching often begins with the awareness that every human is born with the capacity to be, do, or have more in life. Over time, many people lose touch with this sense of possibility. Coaching supports clients in reconnecting with their inner resources and realigning their lives with what truly matters.

Life coaching is a practical, flexible skill.

Life coaching is a practical and flexible skill that can be tailored to each coach and client. Coaching can take place face to face or online, with private individuals or within organizations. Life coaches may specialize in particular areas or offer a more general service, depending on their training and calling.

Coaching is not therapy.

Coaching does not focus on the past or on diagnosing or treating mental health conditions. It is not the medium through which serious abuse or addictions are treated. If a coach becomes aware that a client has experienced physical, mental, or sexual abuse, or has an addiction to drugs or alcohol, it is important to recommend that they seek help from a trained professional.

Coaching is not counseling.

Life coaching is not designed to support individuals during deep crisis or serious emotional trauma. It is not intended to treat intense grief, deep depression, or other psychological conditions. When these issues are present, the ethical response is to refer the client to appropriate therapeutic or clinical support.

Coaching is not mentoring.

Life coaching does not give people all the answers or tell them how to approach every situation. Instead, coaching helps clients explore their own solutions. The agenda belongs to the client. A coach encourages and supports clients in identifying their challenges, dreams, and goals and works alongside them to achieve those self-defined goals.
